Delhi a hub of the gems and jewelry trade of north India, the Delhi government owned Gem Testing Laboratory at the Okhla Industrial Estate has started functioning. This laboratory, one of the most advanced of its kind, would test the quality and authenticity of gemstones for both the jewelers and consumers.
The laboratory is a part of the National Institute of Jewelry Design and Technology (NIJDT), promoted by Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). This provides trained human resources to Jewelry industry and trade in Delhi and develop it as the largest center of Gems and Jewelry industry in Northern India.
The laboratory is set up at a cost of Rs. 22 lakhs and is equipped with state of the art Gem testing equipment and best possible technologies made available from domestic and international markets.
The laboratory will issue test reports on the lines of the global market so that the interests of the consumers and traders are safeguarded and they can guard against fake and dubious gems. The reports will also have various security features to prevent anyone from putting forged reports, purported to be from the laboratory.
The Institute conducting short-term training courses in jewelry design, diamond identification and grading, and coloured gemstones has so far trained around 80 participants. NIJDT has also conducted training programmes in association with Indian Diamond Institute, Surat as well as with Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Parida said.
